Signs You Need an Electrical Panel Upgrade
Most people call us after something small goes wrong. A breaker trips every time the space heater and hair dryer share a wall. The lights dim when the furnace kicks on. The panel feels warm, hums or smells faintly of hot plastic. Any of these is worth a look, and a few of them are urgent.
Other reasons are planned ones:
- You still have a fuse box or a 60 amp service
- There are no open breaker spaces, or tandem breakers fill the panel
- You are adding an EV charger, central air, an induction range or a hot tub
- Your panel is a Federal Pacific, Zinsco or Challenger model
- Your insurer or a home inspector has flagged the panel
What an Electrical Panel Upgrade in Denver Involves
The panel is the point where utility power becomes every circuit in your house. An electrical panel upgrade replaces that hub with modern equipment and, when needed, the meter main and the wires that bring power in from the utility.
We start with a load calculation, which adds up what your home actually draws and what you plan to add. That tells us whether a straight panel replacement is enough or whether a 100 to 200 amp service upgrade makes more sense. Then we put the plan and a flat-rate price in writing.
Replacing Federal Pacific, Zinsco and Challenger Panels
Federal Pacific Stab-Lok panels are the best known example of a panel that was trusted for decades and later found to have a problem. Their breakers have a documented history of failing to trip when a circuit overloads. Zinsco and Challenger panels have their own histories, including breakers that can fuse to the bus and connections that overheat.
We do not recommend repairing these panels. We replace them, land each circuit on a new breaker and correct anything unsafe we find along the way. A permitted replacement also gives your insurer and any future buyer a clean record.
Fuse Box Replacement and Older Homes
Plenty of Denver homes were built when a few fuses were enough. A fuse box works until the day someone puts a larger fuse in a slot to stop it from blowing, which defeats the protection.
Replacing a fuse box means a new breaker panel, new labeled circuits and often a new service. Along the way we check grounding and bonding, which older homes often lack. The result is a house with room for modern loads, including an EV charger in the garage.
Subpanels and Whole-Home Surge Protection
A subpanel is a smaller panel fed from the main one. It makes sense for a detached garage, a finished basement, a workshop or an addition, because it puts breakers where you use them instead of running every circuit back to the main panel.
Whole-home surge protection is a device installed at the panel that diverts voltage spikes away from your electronics and appliances. Since it lives in the panel, a panel upgrade is the natural time to add it. We install it on request and explain what it does and does not cover.
How We Coordinate the Xcel Energy Disconnect
A service upgrade often means the utility has to remove the meter so we can safely work on the service. We coordinate that with your utility, and the order of events matters: the permit, the disconnect, our work, the inspection and then the reconnect.
Depending on your address, your utility is Xcel Energy or CORE Electric Cooperative. We work with whichever serves your home and tell you ahead of time when the power will be off.
What Happens on Panel Upgrade Day
We lay down floor protection, turn off the power at the right point and swap the equipment. Each circuit is traced, labeled and landed on a new breaker, and AFCI and GFCI protection is added where the code asks for it.
Before we leave you get a clean, labeled panel directory, photos of the finished work and a walkthrough of what we changed. The electrician who quotes your job is on the crew that does it, so the person who promised you something is the person in your house.
Permits and Inspections for Panel Work
Panel and service work always needs an electrical permit. We pull it with whichever jurisdiction covers your address, such as the City and County of Denver, Aurora or the county, then schedule the inspection and attend it.
That paperwork matters more than people expect. Insurance companies ask for it, home buyers ask for it and so do utility rebate programs. All of our work carries a one-year workmanship warranty in writing.
What Affects the Price of a Panel Upgrade
We quote a flat rate in writing before the work starts. The main things that move it are:
- Whether it is a panel swap or a full service upgrade
- The distance between the meter and the panel
- Whether the mast, meter base or service wires need replacing
- Grounding and bonding corrections the inspector will expect
- Extras such as a subpanel or whole-home surge protection
