Why 48 Amps Needs a 60 Amp Circuit
A Tesla Wall Connector running at 48 amps is a continuous load, meaning it can draw full power for hours. Electrical code treats continuous loads conservatively, so the breaker has to be rated at 125 percent of the charger’s draw. That is why a 48 amp unit needs a 60 amp breaker and wire sized to match.
Undersized wire is where most poor installs go wrong. It runs warm, trips the breaker or forces the charger to throttle itself down.
Load Calculation Before Anything Gets Mounted
We run a load calculation on your home first. It counts your service size, your big appliances, your heating and cooling and whatever you plan to add. The answer is usually one of three things:
- Your panel has room for a full 48 amp circuit.
- Your panel is close, so we set the Wall Connector to a lower amperage that still charges most cars overnight.
- Your panel is full, and an electrical panel upgrade comes first or goes in alongside the charger.
You get that answer before you buy hardware or commit to a schedule.

Tesla sells two wall units, and the right one depends on what sits in your garage.
- Tesla Wall Connector. Built for Tesla vehicles, including Model 3, Model Y, Model S, Model X and Cybertruck.
- Universal Wall Connector. Charges a Tesla and also works with many other EVs, which helps if a second household car is a different brand.

Power Sharing for Multiple Wall Connectors
Two Teslas in a garage do not always need two full circuits. Wall Connectors can be linked so they share one circuit and split the power between whichever cars are plugged in. When one car is full, the other gets the extra amperage.
We wire the circuit, set the shared limit to match your panel and configure each unit so they recognize each other. For many two-car homes, that avoids an expensive service upgrade.
Wi-Fi Commissioning and Final Testing
A Wall Connector is not finished when the wires are tight. Before we leave, we power the unit up, connect it to your home Wi-Fi, confirm the firmware is current and check that it charges at the rate your circuit was designed for. Where the charger goes matters as much as what it is. We look at where the charge port lands when you park, then mount the unit so the cable reaches without stretching across the floor.
Attached garages are usually the simplest, with straight, level conduit from the panel. Carports, detached garages and outdoor walls need weather-rated fittings that handle Colorado winters, and sometimes trenching for an underground run. We protect your floors while we work and clean up when the job is done.
Permits, Inspection and Rebate Paperwork
Every new 240-volt charging circuit gets a permit. We pull it with the City and County of Denver or whichever jurisdiction covers your address, schedule the inspection and attend it. Permitted work protects your insurance coverage and helps when you sell.
Utility rebates and incentives for EV charging change over time. When Xcel Energy or another program asks for an itemized invoice and contractor details, we supply them.
